News and Announcements

Dear CSMS League Members:

Your Calgary Senior Men’s Slo-pitch Board of Directors is considering the possibility of creating additional daytime playing opportunities.

These additional ‘Day Ball’ games would be for players in the AA and AAA Divisions, (since the A Division already plays during the day).

The details of a possible AA/AAA Day Ball plan have not been fully worked out, but at this point the Board would like to get an idea of how many players might be interested. Here are the answers to some questions you might have:

*Where? Games would be played at the Charleswood and Triwood diamonds.
*Cost? There would be an additional cost similar to the regular CSMS league fee.
*Who? Participation would open to all men over the age of 55. Participation would be ability-based.
*Conflict? Players would be allowed to play both regular evening ball and AA/AAA Day Ball.
*Rules? Current CSMS bylaws and playing rules would apply to AA/AAA Day Ball.
*Teams? Teams would be made up by means of a separate draft.
*Equipment Uniforms and playing equipment would be supplied by the league.
*Insurance? The insurance required to play in the CSMS would also cover AA/AAA Day Ball.
*COVID-19? The AA/AAA Day Ball plan is contingent on COVID-19 being substantially under control.

Are you interested? Please send an email, (don’t reply to this one), to Gary.Paukert@GMail.com indicating which of the following applies to you:

1. I have no interest in AA/AAA Day Ball
2. I like the idea of AA/AAA Day Ball and would likely play BOTH that and evening ball.
3. I like the idea of AA/AAA Day Ball and would likely play it INSTEAD of evening ball.

Thank you for helping the Board by providing us with useful feedback!

Best regards,

Gary Paukert

I’m saddened to hear from Ron Williams this morning that the following obituary for one of our long-time members, Nestor Shular, appears at the Calgary Herald website (https://calgaryherald.remembering.ca/obituary/nestor-shular-108110584). Nestor played in our league for 14 years from 2006-2019.

The league grieves with Nestor’s wife, Diane, and his family and extends it’s heartfelt sympathy.

Good afternoon, everyone:

As you know, the recent accelerated spread of COVID-19 makes it necessary for us to hold our Fall General Meeting online-only via Zoom. The meeting will begin at 7:00pm this coming Wednesday, November 18th.

Please save this email and click on the link under ‘Join Zoom Meeting’ below when you are ready to join the meeting. If clicking on the link doesn’t work, you can copy it and paste it in your internet browser address field. You will be able to join the meeting at any time.

I will be online two hours early, at 5:00pm, to try to make sure this all works and to help people who might have trouble connecting. My cell phone number is 587-435-4426 if you experience any trouble in signing in. However, most problems tend to revolve around people not having their speakers or microphones turned on, so you might want to take a moment to make sure you know how to control those before Wednesday.

As Moderator, I will have everyone’s microphones muted until it is an individual’s turn to talk, at which point I’ll let his sound come through for everyone to hear. The way to ‘raise your hand’ will be to ask by typing in the ‘chat’ window. That window is opened up by clicking on the ‘chat’ icon at the bottom of the Zoom window. I’ll take requests to speak in the order they appear in the chat window.

There will be presentations by the various Directors and a vote will be taken to fill 6 Board positions from a field of 8 candidates. The voting procedure is very easy and will just involve clicking to put a check mark beside candidates’ names in a small window that will appear on your screen.

Here’s hoping we can all rally around the technology and pull off the league’s first virtual meeting. I will see you at your computers Wednesday night.

Best regards,

Gary Paukert

Hello Gentlemen,

Please mark your calendars to attend our league’s Fall General Meeting Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00pm.

Because of the recent resurgence of the COVID-19 virus, the Board has decided it is in the best interests of all to make this a VIRTUAL ONLY meeting online via Zoom. Most organizations of our size or larger are successfully holding online meetings. We expect attendance of 75-100 people.

Many, if not most, of you have used Zoom before. But for those who have not, here is what to expect:

  • You will receive an email the day of the meeting with a link to click which will bring you into the meeting.
  • You can choose for people to be able to see you via your computer’s web-camera, or remain invisible.
  • The moderator (that’s me) will keep your microphone muted until you have been recognized to speak.
  • Documents presented, such as financial sheets, will be shared so you can see them on your screen.
  • There will be a chat space where you can type in questions and comments.
  • If voting is necessary, a window will appear on your screen with boxes for you to check.

I will open the Zoom online session an hour before the meeting for anyone who wishes to try to connect early. This will give us some time to help you if you experience technical issues. The main things on your end is to make sure you know how to turn up your computer’s speakers so you can hear, and to read and follow the simple directions for connecting to the meeting.

Your Board of (16) Directors regularly conducts meetings with Zoom, but this will be our first try at a full-league meeting. We appreciate your patience as we work our way through the technology.

We hope to see your smiling faces online on November 18th.

Best regards,

Gary Paukert
