Posted by Gary Paukert at Feb 7, 2020 11:17AM PST ( 0 Comments )

Due to some technical issues with TeamPages and PayPal, you have not been able to register and pay online for the last week or so.

Registrar John Schmidt has beaten the system into submission, and all is now well. This is a good opportunity to remind you to go online and register if you haven’t already, for the 2020 season

The cut-off to register as a Regular member is April 8, 2020 at 10:00 PM. The cut-off to register as Replacement, Alumni and Other members is July 19, 2020 at 10:00 PM.

Tournaments 2020

Posted by Gary Paukert at Feb 2, 2020 6:06PM PST ( 0 Comments )

League:

Are you running a tournament or travel team in 2020? Please keep in touch with Phil McDonald about your team, age bracket and what tournaments you would like to compete in.

Phil is the Board member heading up the Tournament Committee. You can reach him at fillippo@shaw.ca.

Our website has a Tournament page which you can easily access along the left-hand menu on the home page. Tournament dates are starting to trickle in, and I am keeping that page up to date as I receive information about dates and venues. If you have tournament information that you don’t see on the Tournament web page, feel free to send it to me so I can update.

Cheers,

Hello,

There are two opportunities to help league-related casino activities.

Stephan Horbay, the manager of the Triwood Community where we play is in need of volunteers next week as follows:

  • Feb 6, 11am – 7:30pm (x2)
  • Feb 6, 11pm -3:30am (x2)
  • Feb 7, 11am – 7:30pm
  • Feb 7, 6:30pm – 3:30am (x2)
  • Feb 7, 11pm – 3:30am (x3)

You can contact Stephan at 403-282-2677 or by e-mail at triwoodexecutive@shaw.ca. This is a great opportunity for us to maintain the good relationship we have with the organization that rents us one of our diamonds.

Also, Garth Border is on the Board at Calgary 55+ (part of Alberta 55+ whom we support with a portion of our dues for tournaments and insurance). Their casino will be June 21/22 and he needs helpers. You can reach Garth at borderd@telus.net.

Cheers,

Gary

Hello League Members,

The presence of hard-working, knowledgeable umpires, coaches and managers on our diamonds for league games and tournaments is one of the things that really adds to the quality of our league.

This year, Dave Finn will be conducting umpire and rules clinics for umpires, managers, coaches and anyone with a passion for knowing and playing the game better.

The two clinics will be:

Saturday, April 18th from 9:00am – 3:00pm
JT’s Lounge at the Triwood Community Centre
(This clinic is primarily for umpires)

Sunday, April 26th from 11:00am – 3:00pm
JT’s Lounge at the Triwood Community Centre
(This is a rules clinic for managers and coaches)

Please mark your calendars, and you will find the details also on the CSMS League TeamPages calendar. The clinics are open to players as well, but spaces are LIMITED. Please reply directly to Dave Finn at davefinn@shaw.ca to reserve your spot.

Please Note the following:

• Attendance at the April 18th umpire clinic is mandatory for anyone who wishes to umpire this year.
• Attendance at the April 26th rules clinic is strongly suggested for anyone planning to coach or manage a team this year.

Mike Church Has Passed Away in BC

Posted by Gary Paukert at Jan 13, 2020 12:06PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Dear CSMS League Members,

One of the true giants of our league has passed away. We learned last night that Mike Church has passed away.

Mike was long time member who finally had to retire a few years back because his eyesight failed. He was very active in the league for decades and was a real forward thinker that propelled the league to where it is now.

Mike managed a team in the league for years, but is best remembered for our annual September prostate cancer research charity tournament now called the Mike Church Classic. Mike was the initiator of what was first called the ‘Average Age Tournament,’ which later became connected to the prostate charity.

Mike was the first to think of having a league website and was the one who registered the domain known as grandslamslopitch.com on our behalf. He attempted to set up the website on his own, but couldn’t do it due to his eyesight issues.

When he left our league, Mike moved to be near his son in a little village outside of Nelson, BC so any memorial services on his behalf will be held in that area.

Someone who devoted as much time, effort and passion to the league will certainly be deeply missed by those where lucky enough to have known him.

If any additional information comes available, I will of course post it here and in an email to the league.
